Depression, Anxiety and PTSD
If you are struggling with depression this can be a difficult thing to overcome. Common symptoms are sadness, anger, guilt, worthlessness and loneliness. Feelings are neither good nor bad and are often indicators that something is out of balance or that changes need to be made. In counseling for depression we will work towards exploring the distorted thinking that accompanies depression. We will work towards developing coping skills to manage the difficult feelings while also gaining awareness regarding the internal strengths that you have but may have not realized. Therapy does not just stop in the counseling office, it continues into your daily life. We will work together on creating manageable behavior changes to start building a life of peace, enjoyment and acceptance.
Anxiety can be a helpful emotion. It can help us perform better on a test, job interview or crisis situation. However, if it resembles constant worry, nervousness, dread, obsession or fear, it can start to impact our daily lives and functioning. It can be specific or non-specific. Symptoms of anxiety can resemble excessive worry, difficulties concentrating, difficulties sleeping, and becoming easily fatigued or frustrated. Some anxiety disorders include Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Panic Disorders, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. GAD is a common form of anxiety and it is when one experiences an overwhelming sense of anxiety not specifically related to any particular thing. PTSD occurs when one experiences something traumatic. This can vary greatly from person to person. One may experience flashbacks, amnesia about the event, nightmares, avoidance of person place or thing that reminds one of the trauma. We will work towards gaining awareness around the specific feelings you are experiencing. We will work on developing skills to help decrease anxiety so that you can attain the peace of mind to be the person you would like to be in your life. This could include recognizing thoughts or feelings that may trigger anxiety, developing coping skills that can help in the moment i.e. relaxation, breathing or grounding techniques.
